Over the years, we've seen first-hand, both personally and through those close to us — how property, when not managed correctly, can become more of a burden than an asset.

There was a period when I was growing up where someone very close to me owned multiple properties across the country. On paper, it looked like a strong, successful portfolio.

But behind the scenes, the reality was very different.

In one case, letting agents were put in place to manage the property, but poor oversight led to mismanaged funds, the wrong tenants being placed, and a complete lack of accountability. What should have been passive income quickly became a constant source of stress.

In another, a property became tied up in a prolonged dispute involving occupants who refused to leave. What followed was months of legal back-and-forth, uncertainty, and financial strain, all for a situation that felt completely out of control.

In a more extreme case, a property was misused without the owner's knowledge and became associated with illegal activity. By the time it was uncovered, the damage, both financial and structural, was significant, leaving little option but to exit at a loss.

And sometimes, it wasn't just one major issue, it was the accumulation of smaller ones. Maintenance, tenant problems, late-night calls, and the ongoing pressure of managing everything from a distance. Eventually, it became clear: this wasn't sustainable.

One by one, the properties were sold off.

Not because property doesn't work, but because without the right systems, the right people, and the right strategy, the risks can quickly outweigh the rewards.
